The University of Nevada Reno (UNR) with 21,463 students is the second biggest school in the state after the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The city’s public-school system has 77 schools with an enrolment of 48,241 students. Reno’s schools boast of an average math proficiency score of 39% versus the Nevada average of 35%, and reading proficiency score of 48% compared with the 46% statewide average.

A move to Reno (population: 255,601) won’t be a bargain with a cost of living rate and housing costs that are 1.8% and 6.8% higher than the national average, respectively. On the upside, food cost in Reno is 10.8% lower than the national average plus Nevada has no state income tax. The state collects 6.85% to 8.265% in sales tax. The median gross rent in the city is $967.

More than half of all city residents rent. In the suburbs, Sparks and Mogul are known for their above-average schools and both are under 10 miles away from Reno. Residents in Sparks are proud of their hometown’s cleanliness and safety. Mogul is popular among retirees and military veterans for its peace and quiet.

The Local Sports Scene

Local sports fans love UNR’s Wolf Pack athletic teams, which compete in men’s football, baseball, and basketball, and women’s basketball, soccer, and volleyball, among other things. The city is also home to these professional teams: Reno Aces (Minor League Baseball), the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Reno 1868 FC (United Soccer League), affiliated with Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes.
