Local History

The city was named after Gen. Lewis Lawrence Griffin, who was granted the authority to build a railroad line from Macon to Forsyth in 1833. He was a banker, planter, and the first president of the Macon and Western Railroad. He bought 800 acres in the area, envisioning a town at the crossings of a north-south line and a tract running east-west. In 1842, the first steam engine arrived in town. Griffin was incorporated in December 1843.

What’s Griffin, GA Known For?

For better or worse, Griffin is associated with native son John Henry “Doc” Holliday, the iconic gunman and gambler of the Old West, who was also a dentist. He became famous for being part of the O.K. Corral gunfight in Tombstone, Arizona, in 1881, and for his lifelong friendship with Wyatt Earp. Holliday and Earp have been immortalized in films such as “Wyatt Earp,” the 1994 film starring Kevin Costner, “Tombstone” (1993), and “Doc” (1971).
