The city was named after Gen. Lewis Lawrence Griffin, who was granted the authority to build a railroad line from Macon to Forsyth in 1833. He was a banker, planter, and the first president of the Macon and Western Railroad. He bought 800 acres in the area, envisioning a town at the crossings of a north-south line and a tract running east-west. In 1842, the first steam engine arrived in town. Griffin was incorporated in December 1843.
