Was Conroe, TX Named After a Person?

Yes. The city was named after Isaac Conroe, a retired Illinois Cavalry captain who fought in the Civil War. He arrived in Montgomery County from Houston in October 1881. He bought a tract of land and established a sawmill. When a post office was established in the area, he became the first postmaster. A railroad official initially called the town Conroe's Switch because it was a stop along the I&GN Railroad. Eventually, the name was shortened to Conroe.
