When Was Greer Founded?

The city was incorporated on March 25, 1876, as Greers, but the “s” was dropped eventually. James Manning Greer’s 200-acre farm was the foundation of the city named after him. The completion of the Southern Railroad in 1873 attracted settlers to the area. Greer himself sold a few acres to the railroad and the rest of his land to W.T. Shumate, who in turn sold lots to newcomers.
