Local History

Dayton was named after Jonathan Dayton of New Jersey who helped lay out the town. It was incorporated in 1805. Dayton was a Revolutionary War veteran and the youngest person to sign the U.S. Constitution. The opening of the Miami and Erie Canal, from Dayton to Cincinnati, in 1829, helped spur the town’s growth. In 1879, James Ritty invented the cash register in Dayton. In 1892, Wilbur and Orville Wright opened the Wright Bicycle Company. They conducted experiments that led to the first sustained flight of a powered airplane at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in 1903. The brothers are buried in Dayton’s Woodland Cemetery where a monolith stands in their honor.
