Today, the city showcases the state’s furniture-making heritage through the High Point Market, the world’s largest furnishing trade show. Schools and Higher Education

High Point University (4,500 students) is a private Methodist-affiliated institution based in the city. Founded in 1924, the university offers 57 undergraduate degrees within 18 fields of study. There are 25 other colleges and universities within 50 miles of High Point. The city has 29 public schools with a total enrolment of 16,819 students. Archdale Elementary School and Southwest Elementary School are among the top-ranked schools.

Food cost is 4.4% higher than the national average. The Tar Heel State collects a flat rate of 5.25% in income tax. It levies 4.75% in statewide sales tax, and counties charge extra sales tax. 

Know Your Neighborhoods

Residents love High Point for its many assets – more than 40 parks, a number of golf courses, paved greenways, hiking trails, and two lakes for boating and fishing. If you prefer the suburbs, Oak Ridge and Summerfield are known for their superb schools, and they’re a short drive from High Point.

Weather and Climate

There is such a thing as the Carolina Alley. It’s not as active as the Tornado Alley in the central plains, but certain areas of North Carolina and South Carolina are prone to twisters. On March 28-29, 2010, an EF3 tornado with winds of up to 138 miles per hour touched down in High Point. It injured three people, damaged over 600 structures, and destroyed 40 homes.
