The New England Emigrant Aid Society founded Lawrence in 1854 to help keep Kansas Territory free from slavery. The city was home to some of the most avid antislavery advocates. Major conflicts involving those who oppose and support abolition happened in Lawrence, including the Wakarusa War, a skirmish in 1855, and the sacking of Lawrence in 1856. About 55 people were killed between 1855 and 1859 in conflicts collectively known as the “Bleeding Kansas” period.
