The Local History

There are different stories about how the city got its name. In all likelihood, it came from the Algonquin name Moingona, which is found in old maps. The French shortened it, and called the Native Americans who lived in Moingona les Moins and the river in the area la Riviere des Moines. 

Fort Des Moines was established in 1843. It was opened to settlers in 1845. Des Moines became a city in 1857 without the word “fort.” 

A Vibrant Local Culture

Almost all states in the country have a state fair, but only the Iowa State Fair held in Des Moines attracts over a million people from around the world every year. It’s the inspiration for Phil Stong’s 1932 novel, “State Fair,” as well as for three films and a Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Broadway musical, all with the same title. The Butter Cow is one of the fair’s biggest attractions. It’s a tradition that began in 1911 when J.K. Daniels sculpted the fair's first butter cow. Every year since then, the fair's dairy artist carves the 600-pound sculpture. Much of the butter is recycled after the event.

The Cost of Living in the City

Des Moines is the largest city in the state (population: 214,237). Its cost of living rate and food costs are 7.2% and 6.7% lower than the national average, respectively. However, its housing cost is 11.3% higher than the national average. Median gross rent in Des Moines is $822 while the median rent for a two-bedroom apartment is $677. Iowa levies an income tax rate ranging from 0.33% to 8.53% and 6% to 7% in sales tax.

Over 12,000 people live in downtown Des Moines. The area is expected to attract more newcomers with 3,300 new housing units being planned or under construction. Housing options include studios, lofts, condos, townhomes, and brownstones. In the suburbs, Clive and Johnston are both a short drive to Des Moines. Young families are drawn to these communities for their above-average schools, amenities, and safety.

Shopping in Des Moines

There aren’t many places as retail-friendly as Iowa, which holds tax-free shopping days on the first Friday and Saturday of August. For big-name retailers, visit Valley West Mall, Southridge Mall, and the Outlets of Des Moines. 

Looking for something unique? Valley Junction, a historic railroad district founded in the 1890s, has more than 150 specialty stores, art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants. Antique lovers should head over to Brass Armadillo Antique Mall, which features more than 450 antiques and collectibles dealers.
