Local History

Newnan, incorporated in 1828, was named after Gen. Daniel Newnan, who also served as Georgia secretary of state and as a U.S. congressman. Soon after Newnan’s establishment, it attracted merchants, doctors, lawyers, and other professionals and its cotton-based economy prospered. After the Civil War, the textile industry expanded and Newnan continued to succeed. At one point, it was one of America’s wealthiest cities per capita, with an abundance of grand houses. Unlike Atlanta, Newnan’s buildings were largely untouched during the Civil War, hence the city’s nickname. 

Things to Do in Newnan

Newnan’s six historic districts display some of the most beautiful homes and commercial buildings in all of Georgia. The area’s architecture represents the antebellum and Victorian styles that dominated 19th-century development. Downtown Newnan is composed of nine blocks representing the Washington-type layout, characterized by wide avenues and a public square. The Chattahoochee Bend State Park, one of Georgia’s biggest state parks, is a great place for hiking, biking, and fishing. The park is located on the southern bank of the Chattahoochee River. At 2,910 acres, the park has more than six miles of wooded trails and an observation platform for a fantastic view of the river and forest.
