How Did Douglasville Get Its Name?

Douglasville, established on Feb. 25, 1875, was named after Douglas County. However, there are two stories as to how the county got its name. Most sources say it was named after Stephen A. Douglas, the Illinois Democrat who lost the 1860 U.S. presidential election to Abraham Lincoln. Other sources say Douglas County, founded in 1870 during the reconstruction period when many African Americans were holding office in the Georgia legislature, was originally named after the abolitionist Fredrick Douglass. But after the Confederate Democrats took control, the county was named after Stephen Douglas by dropping one “s.”
