The Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is a popular family destination primarily for its underwater mermaid show. Local History

What’s known today as Spring Hill appeared on Florida maps as early as 1856. The area was developed as a planned community in 1967 by the Mackle Brothers and the Deltona Corp. As part of the company’s marketing efforts, it offered flights to the area and sold houses starting at $8,510. The aggressive marketing helped sell Spring Hill homes quickly.  The area grew fast, although it remains unincorporated, which means the town doesn’t have its own governing entity.

Spring Hill (population: 107,855) is plenty affordable. Its cost of living rate, food, and housing costs are 6.1%, 11%, and 18.8% lower than the national average, respectively. Spring Hill receives about 53 inches of rain per year, more than the national average of 38 inches. At least, it doesn’t get any snow. Also, no hurricane has made landfall in the area. Hernando County as a whole has experienced only minor to moderate effects from hurricanes and coastal storms. However, beware of sinkholes. The western half of Hernando County, especially Spring Hill, accounts for 95% of all sinkholes in the county, according to the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management. Most sinkholes are small, about three to four feet across and up to five feet deep.
