During the Great Depression, John W. Tyson moved his family to Springdale in search of opportunities. He founded Tyson Foods in 1935 by delivering chickens to regional hubs like St. Louis and Chicago. Today, Tyson is a multinational, protein-focused food company worth about $40 billion. It produces about 20% of the beef, pork, and chicken consumed in the United States. Tyson Foods is Springdale’s top employer. Other major employers in the city are Springdale School District, George’s Inc. (poultry processing), Northwest Health System, Cargill ((poultry processing), and Rockline Industries (sanitary paper products).

Local Population

Out of Springdale’s population of 81,125, more than 12,000 are from the Marshall Islands. About 15,000 Marshallese live in northwest Arkansas and in nearby communities in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri. The U.S. gained control of the Marshall Islands from Japan during World War II. It conducted nuclear testing on the islands between 1947 and 1962. In 1986, Marshall Islands attained independence under a Compact of Free Association.

Springdale has some of the highest-ranked public schools in the state. Cave Springs and Bentonville have comparable schools.
