Hot Springs in central Arkansas was named after the 47 thermal springs in the area. It’s home to America’s first federal reservation, and also known as the birthplace of Major League Baseball spring training.

Local History

The springs in the area produce about one million gallons of water every day at an average temperature of 143ºF. In 1832, President Andrew Jackson designated Hot Springs as the first federal reservation, protected by the U.S. government for recreational use. In essence, the Hot Springs Reservation became America’s first national park, predating Yellowstone National Park by 40 years. Hot Springs became a city in 1886, the same year the Chicago White Stockings (the Cubs) came for the first-ever Major League Baseball spring training. Between 1886 and 1930, hundreds of players from different teams came for training every spring. 

Tourist Attractions

The Hot Springs National Park (originally called Hot Springs Reservation) covers over 5,000 acres of land. You can bathe at Buckstaff Baths, which has operated in the park for more than 100 years, or enjoy a spa day at the Quapaw Bathhouse’s indoor and outdoor pools. Take a stroll down Bathhouse Row, featuring an extensive bathhouse collection. The Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort is the other popular destination in Hot Springs. It has hosted thoroughbred racetracks since 1904, and best known for its $1 million Arkansas Derby. 

Cost of Living in Hot Springs, AR

There’s good news and bad news for newcomers. Hot Springs is an affordable small city (population: 38,797) with a cost of living rate that’s 9.3% lower than the national average. Food and housing costs are 11.3% and 19% lower than the national average respectively. The median gross rent is $727. However, the Natural State’s sales tax of 6.50% to 11.625% is among the highest in the country. Arkansas levies 0% to 6.90% in income tax.

Know Your Neighborhoods

Locals rave about their scenic surroundings, not to mention the world’s freshest drinking water. The springs attract tourists, so get used to the crowds. Although Hot Springs has good schools, there are other towns nearby with higher-ranked schools such as Lonsdale and Lake Hamilton Township.

Weather and Climate

Arkansas is not part of the Tornado Alley, but it’s been struck by twisters. On April 25, 2011, Hot Springs was one of the areas hit by a “super outbreak.” About 300 tornadoes impacted 15 states, with Alabama bearing the brunt. The tornadoes caused five deaths in Arkansas alone. Hot Springs receives 57 inches of rain annually versus the U.S. average of 38 inches, and only two inches of snow per year.
