The area had long been inhabited by Native Americans due to the location of the rivers, Etowah, Oostanaula, and Coosa. The city was named after Rome, Italy as both cities developed on seven hills. Rome, Georgia has also worked with an Italian company which resulted in a gift in 1929 of a statue from Benito Mussolini. 

The area is rich with history, dating back as far as 1000CE, based on archeological findings. Much of the Creek Civil War took place in the area now known as Rome. During the American Civil War, Rome was an important supplier to the Confederate army.

The Rome City School District serves over 5,000 students, divided between eight elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Rome residents also have access to four colleges, Berry College, Georgia Northwestern Technical College, Georgia Highlands College, and Shorter University.
