Despite being located in the infamously rainy Pacific Northwest, Spokane only averages around 17 inches of rain per year. It does see more snow than most U.S. cities, however, at a whopping 44 inches on average each winter. Spokane only gets up to about 84ºF on the year’s hottest day, and the year’s coldest day typically won’t dip below 24ºF. Although December and January can be unpleasant, July, August, and September are typically very temperate and inviting in Spokane.

The average household income in Spokane is around $44,768 per year. Those with specializations in agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting as well as mining, quarrying, and extraction of oil and natural gas tend to make higher yearly salaries in Spokane than the rest of the U.S. As of 2013, some of the top employers in the city are Spokane Public Schools, the State of Washington, and Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and Children’s Hospital.

Spokane Public Schools, or District 81, is the second-largest school district in the state of Washington with around 30,000 elementary, middle, and high school students being educated each year. Higher education opportunities include the Community Colleges of Spokane system as well as Gonzaga University and Law School.
