In 1847, the Akron School of Law designed the K-12 grade school system, which is now used in all 50 U.S. states. During the Women’s Suffrage movement in the mid 19th century, Sojourner Truth delivered her famous speech “Ain’t I a Woman?” at the Universalist Old Stone Church in Akron. Beginning in the early 20th century, Akron became known as the Rubber Capital of the World by housing the headquarters of the Goodrich Corporation, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, and General Tire.

Akron’s Climate

Though Akron receives the U.S. average for rainfall at 38 inches per year on the dot, it’s a much snowier city than most at around 42 inches every winter. Summers are temperate in Akron with a high of around 83ºF in July, but winters can get chilly at a January low of 20º. 

Employment Opportunities

As made clear by its title of Rubber Capital of the World, Akron is the home of a great amount of industry and economic opportunity in the rubber and tire business. Additionally, Akron contains an area known as Polymer Valley, which holds 45% of all of Ohio’s polymer industries. Akron also features a great amount of opportunity in the healthcare industry with its Biomedical Corridor, Summa Health System, and Akron General Health System.

Akron’s residents primarily use the Akron-Canton Regional Airport for their business and pleasure travel needs. Public transport is provided to the city by the METRO Regional Transit Authority system with a fleet of over 200 buses and trollies.
