In 1766 Moravian settlers from Easter Europe established the settlement of Salem.  These excellent craftsmen were very innovative and created many items that quickly led them to become a significant trading center throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.  A portion of the land was sold to the county and was renamed Winston, after a famous Revolutionary War hero. In the 1800s, the Carolina Railroad connected the two towns, and the area became known as Winston-Salem in 1913. This city was also a major point of entry and became the largest import/export center for tobacco. Presently, this is the 4th largest city in North Carolina, and it still has a strong reputation for cultivating the arts, preserving its culture, and holding on to its innovative spirit.  

Getting Around in Winston-Salem 

The Winston-Salem Transit Authority (WSTA) offers bus services to and from the city.  They have over 30 routes driven daily.  Passengers can ride the bus for $1.00 per trip. In 2014, a new 34.5-mile multi-lane freeway was built to loop around the city's northern portion to alleviate the very heavy traffic in that area. The closest airport to the town is the Greensboro/High Point airport, which is about 2 hours away. Residents can take a bus from Winston-Salem directly to the airport.

With an awesome mix of historic pride, food, and art, this city has an abundance of attractions throughout the year for all to enjoy. For a feel of the rich history prevalent in this town, stay at The Cardinal Hotel, a luxurious boutique hotel that includes a bowling alley and basketball court. Downtown is a great place to walk around and enjoy the many local restaurants, shops, and specialty boutiques. Families with younger children should check out the Kaleideum Downtown (formerly the Children's Museum of Winston-Salem). Old Salem is a must-see, where you can take a tour and partake in some workshops that feature trades of the past. Some great places to eat include Krankies Coffee, The Katharine, and Sweet Potatoes. Some very popular and highly anticipated annual events happening in this city are the Celtic Festival & Highland Games, the RiverRun International Film Festival, the Carolina Classic Fair, and the Tanglewood Park Festival of Lights.

The five largest ethnic groups include White (45.9%), Black (34.3%), Latino (10.3%), Other (3.67%), and Asian (2.24%). The median age of residents is 35.3 years. The average household income is $42,219, a 3.23% increase from last year. There are 2.44 people per household on average. Property values average $142,200. About 54.5% of residents own their homes, leaving the remaining 45.5% of occupants to rent.
