In 1755 the Salisbury Township was established. This city was built along a Native American trading route and quickly became an economic hub on the Great Wagon Road in North Carolina. In the 19th Century, the first railroad appeared, and it became a central hub for passengers traveling along the eastern corridor. 

In the 20th Century, the industrial sector supported the economy due to the increased production of textiles and several mills operating in the city. The city became so congested that there were 326 persons per acre, which called for new housing development. The electric streetcar invention allowed for new housing development outside of the city because people could easily commute to and from Salisbury daily for work. 

Today, this city has two historic colleges: Catawba College (1851) and Livingstone College (1879). This city is known for the regional grocery store chain "Food Lion," founded in 1957, and created cherry-flavored soda called "Cheerwine” in 1917.

This frontier town has had some of the world's biggest names and events in American history. George Washington visited the city in 1791, Daniel Boone grew up on the outskirts of Salisbury, Andre Jackson studied law here, and the town was home to a famous Confederate prison surrounded by a historic cemetery.

Today, this wonderful community has a growing arts crowd, four colleges, and a very diverse group of business professionals. Downtown Salisbury is the place to be as it offers many entertainment venues, an unique shopping experience, and various events happening throughout the year.
