Local History

Anderson spent the first few decades of its existence toggling between village status and city status. However, its city incorporation finally stuck in 1865 with a population of around 1,300 residents. Natural gas was found in the Anderson region in 1887, which greatly contributed to the Indiana Gas Boom that boosted the economy of the entire state. In 1897, Anderson became the birthplace of the Interurban Railroad, a term coined by local stockholder Charles Henry.
