The William McKinley Presidential Library and Museum is a science center, historical library, planetarium, and museum combined. McKinley was born on Jan. 29, 1843, in Niles, Ohio, but he lived in Canton. He served as president from 1897 until Sept. 6, 1901, when an anarchist shot him in Buffalo, New York. He died eight days later. He is buried at the McKinley Monument, a domed mausoleum and beloved landmark in Canton. The Pro Football Hall of Fame houses the bronze bust of each of the honorees (currently 326), including Marcus Allen, Bill Parcells, Emmett Smith, and Troy Aikman. A section of the museum displays replicas of all Super Bowl rings and features an interactive kiosk where you can design your own ring. 

Local History 

Canton was founded in 1805 and incorporated as a city in 1838. Bezaleel Wells, one of the best surveyors in the country and the city’s founder, named it after Canton, China. In the years leading up to the Civil War and after the conflict, Canton became an important agricultural and industrial center. It was a leading manufacturer of agricultural implements in northeastern Ohio.

Canton, with a population of 70,447, is smaller than its neighbor Akron, but it’s also more affordable. Ohio collects 0% to 4.797% in income tax, and many municipalities charge up to 3% of additional income taxes. It also levies sales tax at both state and local levels, with the statewide sales tax at 5.75%.
