Local History

In 1844, the state legislature approved the establishment of Delaware Township in the area. It was largely farmland until the 1920s, but grew rapidly after World War II. And yet the township didn’t have its own post office. When residents asked for one, the U.S. Postal Service informed them that the name Delaware had already been claimed by another New Jersey postal facility. A contest was held to pick a new name. Cherry Hill, the name of a 19th-century farm in the area, won. Residents approved the name change in November 1961.

Things to Do in Town

The Garden State Discovery Museum is the region’s most popular children’s museum.  Hands-on exhibits and interactive programs teach children about the world of science. Take in some history by visiting the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial, anchored along the New Jersey side of the Delaware River in Camden. Tour the decks and passageways of the battleship, which was used for combat operations in the Pacific during World War II, as well as the Korean War and Vietnam War.
