Local History

Early settlers lived along Fivemile Creek, with the first school in the area opening in 1885. In 1893, an Order of Odd Fellows chapter was established in the area, choosing Meridian as the name for its lodge because it was located on the Boise Meridian, the initial point for a survey of the Idaho Territory. Also in 1893, Meridian the town was established on land belonging to Eliza Ann Zenger. Her husband Christian filed the plat with county officials as Meridian. It was incorporated in 1903.

Weather and Climate

Meridian usually gets only 10 inches of snow per year versus the U.S. average of 28 inches, but the winter of 2016-2017 was an exception. Dubbed “Snowmageddon” by residents, the area received about 39.1 inches of snow, including 14 inches in December and 21.5 inches in January. The snowstorm compelled both Boise and Meridian to declare a state of emergency. The Idaho National Guard came to help clear the snow.

The city’s median gross rent is $1,111. The Gem State levies a progressive income tax rate of 1.125% to 6.925%, and 6% in sales tax.

National publications and websites have recognized Meridian, only 12 miles from Boise, as one of the best places to live in Idaho in the past few years. While residents appreciate Meridian’s growth, some complain about increased traffic and congestion. Nevertheless, they unanimously praise their beautiful surroundings, the abundance of outdoor recreation, and the city’s excellent amenities. Meridian has great schools, but families interested in the suburbs should look into Eagle and Nampa.
