Local History

Moultrie was established in 1859, and named after Gen. William Moultrie, a hero of the American Revolutionary War, who later served as governor of his native South Carolina. In the 1880s, Moultrie flourished in earnest, thanks to its abundant supply of timber for the shipbuilding industry. By 1900, most of the trees were gone, and the city shifted its emphasis from lumber to farming. Development companies divided the once-forested areas into tracts of farmland. Many farmers from North Carolina, South Carolina, and other parts of Georgia moved to the area.
