Local History 

Mount Airy was named after a conveniently located plantation, designated officially as Mount Airy in February of 1932. It was a quiet, low-key town whose industries were based on the area's numerous mountain streams. Water-powered cotton mills, shoe factories, leather tannery, and grist mills were the primary sources of income for this little city. In the 1880s, tobacco manufacturing became the top industry. After the construction of the railroad was complete in 1893, the city grew exponentially, and the real estate market was booming. Commercial quarrying of Flat Rock, such as granite, had a substantial economic impact on the town. Mount Airy is the largest open-faced granite quarry in the world.
