The Villages is a census-designated area in the middle of Sumter County, Florida that stands at the center of the metropolitan area sharing its name. From 2010 to 2017, The Villages population grew a whopping 32.8%, making it the country’s fastest expanding metropolitan area and a unique place for adults to live.  

Schools and Higher Education

Since The Villages does not typically permit children under 19 to be full-time residents of the area, there is no operating school district. Therefore, all of the schools that fall within The Villages are zoned to districts in neighboring counties. The Enrichment Academy was launched in 2017 in The Village to support lifelong learning with a variety of courses including literature, culinary arts, photography, and foreign language. 

Transportation and Infrastructure

The Villages is bordered on all four sides with a highway; this includes U.S. 27 on the eastern side, U.S. 301 on the western side, County Road 468 on the southern side, and County Road 42 on the northern side, making travel throughout the area as well as visiting neighboring cities very easy for residents of The Villages. Public transit is provided to locals by The Villages shuttle, which follows routes throughout the area each weekday. 

Things to Do in The Villages

Since The Villages is an area designed for adults, most of the local entertainment is geared toward an older crowd. Locals will often be seen cycling through the area in pelotons, playing doubles tennis or pickleball, walking the many local nature trails, or taking in live entertainment at the town square which is presented every night of the week. There are 2,700 clubs operating in The Villages designed for socializing with like-minded people; some of these include sports clubs, gardening clubs, dance clubs, and even genealogy clubs.

Residents over 65 make up 56.3% of the population of The Village as of the census estimate in July 2016. The area has a population of 123,966 and the median age throughout The Villages metropolitan area is approximately 67 years old.

The Villages features several unique shopping experiences for clothing, shoes, accessories, and more at such local spots as Lake Sumter Landing, Colony Plaza, and Brownwood Paddock Square. The area also boasts large chains like Walmart and Publix as well as local favorites like Winn-Dixie and the Fresh Market.
