About Maryland

Maryland is the forty-second largest state by area, with a population of 6,042,718 (U.S. Census Bureau, July 1, 2019). Throughout history, there have been important milestones that helped shape Maryland. In 1633, Lord Baltimore founded Maryland's colonial settlement, which was part of the original thirteen English colonies. During the Revolutionary War, the battle over Fort McHenry in the Chesapeake Bay inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Star-Spangled Banner, recognized today as the National Anthem of the United States. Before the Civil War, Maryland's northern boundary was defined by the Mason-Dixon line, which became a symbol of division between the north and south.

Today, Maryland's economy has a GDP of $417 billion (Bureau of Economic Analysis, July 1, 2018), which is driven by these top industries: aerospace and defense, fishing industry, life sciences, manufacturing, and cybersecurity. Many of the leading Fortune 500 companies have their headquarters in Maryland, including Lockheed Martin, Marriott International, and Discovery, to name a few.
