Schools and Higher Education

Bloomington has an excellent school system, making it a great place to live for families. The city’s public-school district is the Bloomington Public Schools District 87, which has nine schools, including an early education school, six elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. There are also private schools to choose from, including Central Catholic High School, special education, and alternative private schools. If you decide to stay in Bloomington for your post-secondary education, you can attend Illinois Wesleyan University, a small, 4-year private college that enrolls about 2,000 students.

Getting Around in Bloomington

Bloomington is home to one of the fastest-growing airports in the nation, Central Illinois Regional Airport, which services commuter, corporate, and private aircraft. In the last two years, two additional runways have been added, and the airport services all major airlines. The airport offers more than 40 daily flights to cities like Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Orlando, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and St. Louis. The city is also serviced by two major railroad lines and Amtrak, which runs daily. You can also catch regular bus routes through Burlington Trailways, Greyhound Bus Lines, Megabus, and Peoria Charter Coach. Connect Transit is another option, which is the primary transit system that includes eleven different service routes.

Things to Do in Bloomington

Filled with tons of history, Bloomington has a cultural district and many must-see attractions. McLean County Museum of History is located in the 20th-century old McLean County Courthouse. You can discover over 20,000 historical objects and take in exhibits that relate to McLean County’s history, including Abraham Lincoln’s time spent in Bloomington.

At the Miller Park Zoo, you can interact with the animals here with daily animal feedings that are free with admission. They offer overnight programs and a Junior Zookeeper program where you can learn about the animals and how zoos operate. The zoo also has mini-golf, war memorials, and tons of walking trails.

Shopping in the City

There is lots of great shopping to be done in the city. Downtown Bloomington offers antique shops, and stores to get groceries, hardware, sporting goods, home furnishings, and more. Eastland Mall is an excellent indoor shopping option with several stores, including Kohl’s, Foot Locker, Victoria’s Secret, Old Navy, and Ulta Beauty. It also has a Planet Fitness gym and restaurants like Outback Steakhouse and Applebee’s.
